The Best Fall Books for Kids

You're My Little Pumpkin Pie (baby−2y) — One of the cutest little fall books for babies! Not only does this book have the sweetest fall illustrations, but the story is an adorable read that includes a lot of affirming messages. The story isn't too long and the text is written in a rhyming manner, so it perfectly grabs your little one's attention. Despite the title, the fall characters in this infant fall book are more on the halloween side, rather than the thanksgiving side, but it's still an adorable book to read during the fall season.    

Autumn (1−3y) — This enchanting autumn picture book is a must buy book for your little ones this fall season. This fall themed children's book doesn't contain any words, but it's filled with beautifully detailed and calming images of different fall activities and fall weather (e.g. playing in the leaves, harvesting apples, making jam, flying kites during windy days, ect). This fall picture book is a great way to get your kids to comprehend what each fall scene is illustrating, and then implement them into your autumn days.

Tractor Mac Harvest Time (2−5y) — The perfect book for your tractor loving kiddos! Not only does this adorable fall themed book contain fun and realistic illustrations of an apple orchard and pumpkin patch, but it also incorporates a wonderful message about using your talent and skills to help others. This fall children's book is a bit on the longer side and does contain lengthy sentences, so we think it's better suited for kids who are a little bit older (3−6y), making this is one of the best fall books for preschoolers and kindergarteners.    

Hedgehugs: Autumn Hide-and-Squeak (2−6y) — This is a very cute fall book to read to your little ones during the autumn season. The adorable story follows two hedgehogs as they play hide and seek with their new little friend, a bat. Even though the book doesn't specifically tell a story about autumn, it still features autumn characteristics like falling leaves, leaf piles, ect. This book has some wonderful illustrations that are not only vivid but so detailed that your little one's can easily enjoy the pages without reading the book. The text on each page is no more then two sentences, making it one of the perfect fall themed books for preschoolers. 


Autumn is Here! (2−8y) — This adorable kids book about autumn explains all the changes you see during the fall season (e.g. falling acorns, changing leaves, squirrels storing food for winter, ect.) using simple sentences and charming watercolor illustrations. The story is told with repetitive passages, so it makes it an easy autumn story for preschoolers to follow along. However, it's still the perfect fall book for older kids to get excited about the fall season too!

Because of an Acorn (3−5y) — This precious acorn picture book may not specifically be about fall activities, but it's still a wonderful children's nature book, centered around autumn, that simply illustrates how an acorn is a part of the life cycle of nature. This book has no more than four words on each page so it's a fast read for your squirmy little ones. The illustrations are also rich in detail and really the main focus of this book. This is the perfect book to use for a nature study lesson!

Hocus Pocus, It's Fall (3−5y) — Between the rhyming text, gorgeous illustrations and magic words used throughout the story, there's so much to love about this children's fall book! This book perfectly captures the magic of the fall season, and your little ones will love opening the fold out pages to reveal a change that happens during the fall. The vibrant fall colors are what really gives this book a charming feel, and the interactiveness of this book makes it one of the best fall picture books for kids!

Fall (3−7y) — This is a really cute and adorable fall board book for young children. It captures all the fun things you can do in the fall, and it's also accompanied by simple yet enjoyable colored pencil illustrations. This book doesn't have any rhyming sentences, but the text and storyline still seems to be written for infants and toddlers, so we think this book would be more enjoyable for kids aged 1.5−3y. Although, this book would also be great for beginning readers to read aloud themselves.


Sophie's Squash (3−7y) — This charming story is the sweetest and most innocent fall themed book you'll ever read! We love the combination of the witty humor and heart felt dialogue seen throughout the storyline of a little girl who befriends and cares for a squash. The story does a great job of depicting innocence, patience, determination and acceptance in a way that's easy for kids to understand. It also wonderfully correlates the turning of seasons with the characteristics of change and rebirth. The illustrations add another level of charm to the book to make this a great fall children's book!  

The Autumn Visitors (3−8y) — The beautiful illustrations in this book make it one of the best picture books about autumn. The simple yet captivating drawings show some of the fall festivities (e.g. going to a cottage, going to the fair, celebrating halloween and thanksgiving, ect.) celebrated by a human family and an adorable bear family. The text in this book is very simple, and honestly not that memorable, but the detailed pictures are what really tell the story. To us this book wouldn't be interesting to older kids, but it makes for one of the best fall books for toddlers or a great practice book for beginning readers.  

Leaves (3−8y) — Not only does this adorable fall book contain beautiful and vibrant pop-up effects that portray the beauty of autumn leaves, but it also includes fun, interactive pull tabs and interesting facts about the changes in the fall season. Your little one's will love looking at all the detail illustrated in this book, and it contains just the right amount of material to keep them engaged. There's not a whole lot of text to the storyline, so it's a great preschool book about leaves.  

Autumn (3−8y) — This calm and gentle autumn book is a great way to introduce your kids to poetry. Each page contains an acrostic poem about a fall object or characteristic (e.g. acorn, leaves, pumpkin, ect.) that explains that word in relation to fall. There are some words that are more centered towards winter, but it's still a great book to read during the fall season. Not only are the poems simple and charming, but the illustrations are classic drawings and accompany the acrostics really well. The poems make this a better fall book for elementary students, but toddlers and preschoolers can still enjoy the words and illustrations.  
The Roll-Away Pumpkin (3−8y) — This darling fall book is a great read to get you and the kiddos into the fall spirit! The cute and simple storyline follows a little girl chasing her giant pumpkin that has rolled away into town. The book has a lovely message about helping others as many people come together to help stop the rolling pumpkin. The text is written as a rhyming and repetitive story, so it's a great fall book for toddlers to enjoy and read along. The gorgeous and colorful illustrations also have a soft, whimsical feel to them that makes it enjoyable for all ages too!

Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn (4−7y) —  This unique book is a great children's book about autumn that not only includes gorgeous, vibrant illustrations but also an informative storyline about the changes that happen during the fall season, as summer is ending. The story is written as a conversation between a girl and nature as she's going on a walk through the woods and around town. The text might not be as engaging to toddlers as other fall books, but it's a great fall story for kindergarteners and older kids! 

Leaf Man (4−7y) — This is probably one of the more unique children's books about fall leaves that we've come across. Each page shows a different collage of the "leaf man" transformed into various animals and vegetables as he's traveling along the wind. The illustrations in this book are very creative and make the perfect model for your kids own leaf art projects. Another unique attribute of this book is that the pages are all different sizes with unique shapes cut on the top of the pages. The text in this book is simple, and honestly lacks a bit of character, but the artistry makes up for it completely.

The Scarecrow (4−8y) — If we had to pick our absolute favorite fall book, this sweet book would be it! It's one of the best fall children's books that's not only beautifully written, but also beautifully illustrated. It does a wonderful job of demonstrating kindness and friendship between a lonely scarecrow and a baby crow in need of help. The story is written in simple, engaging rhyming sentences so it's a great fall book for toddlers. The illustrations also have a dreamy and timeless feeling that correlates so well with the story. 
    
Fletcher and the Falling Leaves (4−8y) — Another sweet and innocent autumn story for kids! The adorable storyline is about a little fox who's worried and doesn't understand why the leaves on this favorite tree are changing colors and falling off. Not only is this a great book to help explain to your little ones about seasonal change, but it's also a great way to help them understand the importance of acceptance and change. This is a great read aloud book for kids of many ages as they'll love listening to the charming story and looking at the gorgeous and colorful illustrations 

Sweep (4−8y) — While this book doesn't particularly have an autumn storyline to it, it does use fall leaves as a comparison to our emotions. The story shows how a little boy is in a bad mood and that a build up of his negative emotions (pile up of leaves) has "swept" him away. We love that this book is a gateway into discussing emotions with kids, and we also love the clever use of a metaphor to make it easier for kids to understand. The comparison might not click right away with younger kids, but the illustrations do an excellent job of visually portraying the moral of the story.  

Autumn: Leaves Fall from the Trees (4−8y) — This fun fall book introduces and explains everything there is to love about fall using simple rhyming text, engaging illustrations, and even music! The book does come with a CD, so your little one's can sing along to the story, but the book is still enjoyable even if you don't "sing" the lyrics.  

Fall Mixed Up (4−9y) — This creative autumn book is a great fall story time book if you're looking for something with a little humor in it. The story is written with everything "mixed up" about the fall season. The storyline might go over the head of younger kids, but it's a great book for kids who already have a little bit of knowledge about fall. The illustrations also do a fantastic job of visually explaining the text, making it one of the best fall books for children.
